"I have never ever seen a book so wonderfully wrapped, in protective layers and impermeable to the weather. A monsoon would not have damaged it. Moreover, the book's condition was even better than your description. You've become one of my favorite book sellers."

![9 pp. / 12 pp. / 58 pp. / 11 pp. 23 x 15 cm / 23.5 x 15.5 cm / 19.5 x 13.5 cm / 22 x 14.5 cm. Four booklets with white paper wrappers with black lettering. 1: Crisis at the University of California, [1949]: Some light toning to extremities of covers, with a few minor stains to front. Small nick to head of the fold of spine. Light bumps to corners of covers and text. Interior is clean and unmarked. Rusting to staples. Very Good. The first of two statements by the ACLU regarding UC Berkeley's Oath of Loyalty that was adopted unanimously by the University's Regents in March of 1949. The booklet begins with the question "Can a state government maintain a free University?", and explores the allocation of academic authority versus legal authority in the hands of the Faculty and the Regents. 2: Crisis at the University of California, II, [1950]: Mild age toning to covers, with a large bump, nicking, and some chipping to head of spine. Some chipping and splitting along folded spine of booklet. Offset toning to page 9 from something that was originally laid-in. Interior otherwise clean and unmarked. Small amount of rust to staples. Good. The second statement by the ACLU regarding the Oath of Loyalty, with this booklet being published after the Board of Regents voted to fire 157 employees in June of 1950. The text addresses three key issues, namely, that (1) the Regents violated tenure agreements, (2) the Regents have also overruled the University President and the University and Faculty Committee on Privilege and Tenure, and (3) that the dismissals are not justified since the faculty has already signed an oath of loyalty to constitutions of the United States and the State of California. Being published after the dismissal, which had been stayed at this point by court order, the second half of the booklet examines just what the University has gained and lost through its actions. 3: Interim Report of the Committee on Academic Freedom to the Academic Senate, Northern Section, of the University of California, February 1, 1951. Light soil to covers with a small nick to head of spine. Interior is clean and unmarked. Some rusting to staples. Very Good. In early 1951, the Committee of Academic Freedom for the Northern Section of the University of California submitted this report to the Academic Senate. The members of the committee were James Caldwell, William Dennes, Ewald Grether, Robert Nisbet, and Wendell Stanley, and together they compiled this report which lays out in detail the consequences of the abrogation of tenure brought about by the Regents the previous year. The booklet is divided into five parts, with each section addressing the various affected areas, which include loss of staff, disruption of programs, reactions of protest from colleagues outside the University, refusal of offers of appointment, and resolutions of Learned Societies. 4: Decision of the District Court of Appeal, State of California, Third Appellate District, Concerning the Special Loyalty Declaration at the University of California, [1951]. Mild age toning to cover and interior, with moderate toning along fore-edge of front cover. Stamp from the Group for Academic Freedom on front, with small dog-ear creases to bottom corner of front cover and interior leaves. Some rusting to staples. Very Good. The final booklet in this grouping, this landmark declaration of judgement is reprinted from the Advance California Reports of April 13, 1951. In this ruling, the California Court of Appeal ordered the University to reinstate all of the academics that refused to sign the Loyalty Oath in 1949, and determined that the University "shall be entirely independent of all political or sectarian influence". $250.00](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/26be6e_2af53a2cf08f4971a9361625776c7424~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_554,h_739,q_90,enc_avif,quality_auto/26be6e_2af53a2cf08f4971a9361625776c7424~mv2.jpg)
